Considerations for Buyers of Horses

From

If you are considering putting money into a horse, consider a few things first.

HAVE YOU NOTICED THE ADVERTISEMENTS FOR $ 500.00 REGISTERED HORSES ? Ever wonder why someone is selling their registered horse so cheap ? In some cases, they simply want a good home for a good horse. But, that is pretty rare. In most cases, it is only after a buyer gets the horse back to his new home that he finds out the problems he has purchased for himself. Consider a few things about a new horse, or foal.

1. Is the horse likely to accomplish the purposes you have set for it ?

This requires some investigation into the horse's background. A nicely written advertisement, or even a fist full of ribbons will not provide all the information you need to know. Know what you expect from your investment. Do you just want a loving companion ? A gentle broodmare ? A dressage classic ? A jumper ? A racehorse ? A trail-horse ? A child-friendly horse ? Have some serious goals in mind before you make any decision, and ask about the characteristics of any horse you are considering.

2. Does the horse have the background that indicates it is suitable for the goals you have set for it ?

Pedigree isn't important to some people. But, if you know the characteristics of the horses in your prospective horse's lineage, you can get a pretty good idea of what type of genes he is made of. Our mares and stallions at Mystic Rider Ranch are chosen very carefully to optimize the inherited characteristics we want to get in a new foal. We shoot for a calm disposition, quick learning ability, and good athletic capabilities. Our breeding program pulls from a gene-pool of characteristics we know about. Our stock comes from the pure Polish bloodlines of Negativ, Nabor, and Druzi Szlem. We also breed from Cisco Kid, *Muscat, *Salon, and Key Largo bloodlines.

3. Is the horse a ready learner ?

Any new owner will want various degrees of training for a new horse. They may range from the most professional training to trying to teach some essentials yourself. Recently a flurry of interviews with professional trainers have produced comments similar to these. "The Arabian horse is usually the quickest to learn and retain what you teach it." "The Arabian horse is almost always easier to train." Our stock are between 62% to 100% Arabian.

4. Has the horse been properly prepared for the training you will give it ?

Whether you want a professional trainer to teach your horse, or you plan to do it yourself, your horse will be better prepared to work with a person if it has been 'imprinted.' At Mystic Rider Ranch, each of our foals is a special project. They are all imprinted from birth, handled and taught every day, and relate very well to humans. Their fears are therefore reduced, and they make even faster learners under a reasonable trainer. Frankly, we get attached to our foals by doing it this way, so, parting with them is difficult. But, we know that if we put our best efforts into a horse so that it will respond to a new owner better, it will have a much more enjoyable life.

5. Does the cost justify my purchase ?

That depends on what you want. If you want a horse to just look at, feed and water, clean up after each day, pay for its vet bills, and then give you fits when it gets out of the fence, the average $ 500 horse will do fine. However, if you seriously want a horse that has been bred for outstanding traits, please consider what we have to offer here.

After all, if you are going to put money into a horse, you need to get the best for your money. Here at Mystic Rider Rider Ranch, we will take the time to acquaint you with the characteristics of your new horse. You will receive all the pedigree, veterinary, and personality information we can give you.
